This Tudor castle has to be one of the prettiest castles in the country, and offers a real taste of history to those who enter its walls. Surrounded by a moat and with a proper drawbridge this is a true castle dating from the 13th century, and offers a magical and unique venue for events.
Originally built around 1270 and then extended in the 1500s with a Tudor addition, ownership passed through several hands until purchased in the early 1900s. Having decided the castle was not big enough for all his guests the owner extended it further with the creation of a sympathetic addition in the form of a small “village” of rooms attached to the Castle, and providing a private and self-contained area which is perfect for exclusive use.
This wing was built using reclaimed materials and with mouldings and carvings made from Tudor tools to obtain the authentic period look and feel. Interiors include wooden beams, carved stone fireplaces and leaded lights and the effect is to create a realistic ancient Tudor building. This is a grand but relaxed setting for a get-together and an impressive venue for an event. Walk in the footsteps of royalty and dine in the Castle Dining Hall where kings and queens have been entertained. Additional event space is also available for larger groups.
It is a supremely romantic venue for a wedding, with a variety of areas licensed for the ceremony. The enchanting Loggia, beside the lake, is the perfect spot for an outdoor ceremony, and the rose garden provides a scented setting for a drinks reception.
The bedrooms have all been recently re-furbished to offer a totally luxurious environment, maintaining a historic feel but with all the comforts you need. Rooms are all individual in style, and many have distinctive features such as four posters beds and roll top baths, a beautiful finishing touch being the swan head tap on the master suite’s bath.
This is an outstanding property. Add to this the extensive gardens, lake and maze and you really have a delightful venue with plenty of historic charm.
